Embryo Transfer

For many couples, embryo transfer is one of the most anticipated and significant stages in their IVF journey of becoming parents. So it is only natural that after the embryo transfer is done, they keep asking, “What to do after embryo transfer to increase success?” Though there is not a specific answer, we have discussed some tips that may help you.

Take rest and pamper yourself

What to do after embryo transfer to increase success?” couples are so hyped to find answers to this question that they don’t realize that the first thing they should do is take a little break. Embryo transfer is a process that may be life-changing for you, and you should not underestimate it.

So if you have gone through this procedure, take a few days to indulge in self-care and pamper yourself. Don’t worry and if possible, take some time off from work. Be patient, and practice yoga or meditation to keep yourself calm.

Eat a healthy diet

Following a proper diet can also increase the success of embryo transfer. A nutritious diet is crucial for the growth and development of the baby growing inside you, and therefore, you must eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and food items that include calcium, vitamin B, protein, and iron.

Continue taking your medicines

After the embryo transfer, many women abandon the medications and injections that they were taking prior to the embryo transfer. However, you should not stop taking the progesterone injections that were prescribed without consultation with your doctor. Progesterone is a hormone that is crucial to sustaining the pregnancy, and therefore you must take your medicines religiously.

Reduce exposure to endocrine-disruptors

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are known to interfere with the way the body’s hormones work and can even interfere with the development of the baby’s organs. Though it is not possible to reduce 100% exposure to the EDCs, you can avoid the following:

  • Car exhaust
  • Thermal receipts
  • Organic food
  • Cosmetics, hand sanitizers/creams, sunscreens
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Old furniture and flame retardants such as computers
  • Newly applied paint

Don’t take a pregnancy test right away

Though it must be difficult to fight the urge to take the pregnancy test right after the embryo transfer, you must know that your body can take a couple of weeks to build up enough of the pregnancy hormone, HCG, before it reflects in your pregnancy test. Thus, to save yourself from disappointment, try to not give in to your early temptation of taking the test again and again.

Steer clear from high heat

A raised internal temperature can compromise implantation. Therefore, after embryo transfer, you should avoid hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms, even if you find them tempting and relaxing. Also, you should also avoid being submerged in water after embryo transfer, as it can cause infection.

Say no to rigorous exercise

Generally, after the embryo transfer, you can resume the normal activities, including mild to moderate workouts, which may benefit both the mother and the baby. However, rigorous exercise may decrease the embryo’s chances of implanting, and therefore experts don’t recommend vigorous exercise or activities that may cause discomfort.

Avoid sexual intercourse

Doctors often recommend avoiding sexual intercourse as it can trigger urine contractions, preventing the embryo from planting itself in the uterus. In worst cases, it can even cause miscarriage.

Start folic acid supplements

Folic acid helps in successful implantation by providing a favourable receptive environment. In addition, maternal supplementation with folic acid is also associated with a lower risk of congenital heart defects in babies.

Rely upon your partner for support

After embryo transfer, there is not much that you can do. So try not to be hard on yourself, and lean on your partner if you are suffering from anxiety. Seek refuge in their warmth instead of isolating yourself. Waiting is the hardest part, and you don’t have to be alone in it.

Contact your doctor

After embryo transfer, don’t delay in seeing your doctor if you have either of the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding or a brown discharge
  • Persistent feeling of sickness
  • Vomiting or fainting
  • Pain and breathlessness
  • Abdominal swelling
